Authentic Transformation: The journey to find the inner voice that calls to us from our place of deep longing. By responding to the ‘call’ of the inner voice, we authentically transform.

SERIES: INGENERARÉ each piece acts simultaneously as a component that can be moved, rotated and transformed into a multiple new arrangements....a sort of transformer art. This is just one configuration. I'll post more once I have the work back home to photograph.

We estimate over 100 people attended the event!!!! Way to go Manitoba!! You ROCK!!!!!

Unseasonal 'Juneuary' temperatures, as the warmest January in Manitoba on record is now being dubbed, helped bring out the crowds. The recorded high for the day was -5.9°C!!

This is my first time working in series and I LOVED it!!! What a great experience the mentorship program has been. I'm just sorry it has to come to an end.

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to our RAMP mentors Jazz de Montigny and Cameron Forbes as well as Tim Shouten of the Manitoba Arts Network for all their hard work installing this wonderful show for us. It was such a great learning experience.

I didn't get to photograph the work prior to the show so I have to wait until I have it back home to post better images.

This is the third in my Starfish Series. These were created to accompany my larger piece 'Polar Play' in the Wild Beauties and Untamed Beasts Show. They were a lot of fun to create and I enjoyed playing with the shapes, colours and brush strokes on each one.

Studio Happenings

Well, I've decided to take the plunge and move my studio to one space. Great thing is my commute is only going to be down my basement stairs! LOL. It isn't the most beautiful space, but I believe, after touring several working artists spaces that pretty does not have to be a quality of a studio in order to produce good work. I have cabinets coming this week (throwaways from a friend) and I want to get a coat of paint on the walls to brighten it up a bit, but over all it's starting to look comfy. Good news is my hubby won't have test his patience looking at art supplies strewn about our main living area any more. Even I was getting tired of that and it was my stuff!

Hopefully I'll have a photo or two to post in the next couple of weeks.

Starfish Symbolism

Starfish: In Christian symbolism the Starfish represents the Virgin Mary (Stella Maris which means Star of the Sea) who lovingly creates safe travel over troubled waters and is also seen as an emblem of salvation during trying times. The star as well as the Starfish are seen as celestial symbols and as such, they represent infinite divine love. In addition to love, the Starfish also holds characteristics such as guidance, vigilance, inspiration, brilliance and intuition.

This 'sketch' is a prelim to a larger finished piece. In this sketch I'm testing out colour, shape, design, composition and really just playing with ideas. This may even get more hours on it and become a finished painting...but for now it's simply a start. It marks a new beginning for me, I'm excited to share that I'm taking my work in a different direction and starting a new series that will combine two main parts of my life, construction and art.

Why work in series?

To an artist a series is a place to explore, research and dive deeper into a theme, medium or statement. To push boundaries. Some series are very simple and direct, while others are puzzles that require great thought. It's a wonderful way to speak to viewers and communicate something more than just showing a room full of pretty pictures. Series' can spark question, conversation, thought and debate. They can touch on political, social and cultural issues. Often a series will cause the viewer to question.... Why do I like this or why don't I? Why did this person choose to depict this? Am I comfortable or uncomfortable with the work and why? How does it make me feel emotionally? What are they trying telling me? Am I receiving the message? Do I agree or disagree with them? Why should I take my valuable time and spend it here, looking at this work? A well executed series can take a simple painting and transform it into a philosophical experience.

I've been hungry to bring something more to my work, a reason, a statement; to produce artwork with purpose. Working in series just feels right to me at this point in my journey and its my hope it will move me to new places. All summer I've been mulling over and contemplating what I want to say with my work. How should it speak for me? I do believe I've found it. I am not going to say anything more about the series for now, but will keep posting progress and more info as it comes together. Oh, and don't worry, I have not abandoned my Winnipeg Humane Society series, that is still coming along! I've got lots of new ideas for that too!!

This is one of the paintings included in the 'A' is for ~~Apple~~ ART! show along with my 'Two Bee or Not Too Be?' piece. I've been working on this piece for the past couple of months. It's titled 'Polar Play' and was inspired by the new exhibit being built at Assiniboine Park Zoo, called Journey to Churchill. I absolutely cannot wait until that exhibit opens in 2013!!! It's going to be very exciting, Assiniboine Park Zoo will be taking in orphaned cubs and rehabilitating them at this new facility. It will have a viewing area below where observers can watch the bears dive and swim. It's supposed to be top notch, and give the inhabitants a wonderful quality of life in captivity.

As for the painting itself, I've got into a groove lately and am having a wonderful time....playing....errmmm, I mean painting. What I'm finding by working on larger canvases is that I am no longer obsessed with finishing a painting, I'm simply enjoying the process of painting. It's like dancing on the canvas with my brush. When working on small canvases I found I was focused at the start (first initial session working on the piece) and then by the next session I just wanted to get it done, finished and start another. With the large canvas this is an impossible task and knowing that seems to put you in a different frame of mind. I am working more from intuition and begin with a loose framework, but don't know exactly how the piece will finish off. Painting this way is surprising and let's me push my boundaries

My next goal is to actually take a journey to Churchill and see the bears in their wild environment!!

WOW! Almost two months since I've posted!!!! Yikes! Life has been going high speed and whipping right by. Lot's of art on the go, just not a lot was at a point of photographing and sharing. This piece was completed a few months ago, but it was at my mentor's studio and I just got it home this weekend.

Milos held our annual student show again this year at the Outworks Gallery in Winnipeg's Exchange District. It's really a nice space and the show was beautiful, as always. It is so inspiring to see all of our work together. Many of us do not see the work of others if they paint on different days, so it's a real treat seeing people we only see once a year and viewing their latest works. I find it very interesting how Milos influences all of us, but each of us is so very different. None of us paint like him, nor do we paint like each other.

Every year we are given a group assignment to bring the show together. This year's group assignment each student was to paint an apple. We were to bring in whatever apple we wanted and paint from life, then create our work however we wished. The only 'have to's' were the canvas had to be 10"x10" and an apple was the subject. Each and everyone one was completely different and they looked so good all hung together.

Detail of my 'signature stars' that I've been incorporating into my work lately.

A detail of the bear himself, showing the layer upon layer of individual colours applied. It's a form of pointalism, but just not the traditional dots...more like dash-alism, LOL. I try to vary the strokes so some areas are more intense and others are blended. The overall effect being that piece ends up having different areas of interest, almost mini paintings within a painting.

This is a painting I originally started last summer. I had a vision of this bear and needed to get him on a canvas. I got part way into the work and then seemed to loose focus on what to do with the piece other than the bear. So he sat on the shelf....until a few weeks ago, waiting for me to figure out what was missing. I began by making background darker and adding a moon (zodiac ruler). Did that...didn't like it....changed the moon to a ying-yang symbol (my zodiac sign). Didn't like that either, both seemed to draw the focus away from the bear and give two focal points. Then I added the big dipper (Ursa Major - the Big Bear) on his shoulder and once again I was hit with inspiration by the stars. Perhaps I should rename the piece, 'Celestial Spirit'

Here's the original 'unfinished' work. I wasn't completely unhappy with it, but I felt is was missing something in the upper part of the painting. I've been playing with the stars and flower whimsical/surreal theme lately and wanted to interject my recent signature 'stars' into the piece. If you look carefully many of my newer pieces have whimsical stars somewhere in the paintings.

Manitoba, a place where the wild wood bison now roams. In 1991 a herd of 13 wood bison was released into the Northern Interlake region, a few years later another 9 were added. Now, 20 years later they are flurishing, breeding and expanding their territory and are numbering 212 - 300 animals strong.

I'm also very lucky to have a bison farm about a 10 minute drive from my studio. They are such wonderful creatures and great fun to go observe, photograph and sketch.

Spring is just around the corner, and one of my favourite critters is about to make an his annual apperance. The American White Pelican comes to Manitoba every summer to lay it's eggs, rear it's young, lounge on our sandy beaches and fish our well stocked rivers and lakes. Lockport is a small town about 15 minutes from where I live and the pelicans come and fish the locks right alongside the locals.

As promised, here it is..the piece I've been working on for a while now. This painting holds special meaning to me, and is another of my Shakespeare inspired works. It will be exhibited later on this year. It looks much better in real life, there is so much colour it was very hard to photograph. I will try again and see if I can get better lighting.

"To be or not to be?" Hamlet's famous question and one of the most known lines in English literature. Simply put, do I choose life or death? In this statement Hamlet is contemplating suicide. Quite an extreme question and one that many contemplate, but seldom act upon, at some extremely low point in their lives. Having had suicide personally touch my life, through the loss of a close family member, I can appreciate the depth of despair and darkness of this statement.

However, in a less extreme way, there are those who unconsciously make a similar choice everyday. A living-suicide, if you will. All around me I see others loudly proclaiming how unhappy & ungrateful they are for all their gifts. Like spoiled children. Ungrateful for their loving spouse, beautiful children, wonderful families and good health. Ungrateful for living in a free country, having rights and well paying jobs that afford them fantastic lifestyles. Each of them choosing to carry around misery.

I choose to live. Everyday I am grateful for ALL my gifts; my husband, my family, my health, the health of my loved ones, my home, my country, my career, my Internet friends, my art. Am I luckier or more fortunate than others around me? Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps the ability to be grateful is actually a gift all it's own? I focus on beauty, goodness, life and light while others seem to enjoy looking for ugliness, fear, death and darkness.

Please take a moment to share what you are grateful for in your life. I'd love to hear about your gifts and put more uplifting, positive thoughts out here on the world wide web.

Thought I'd share a work in progress, as I haven't been blogging much lately. All the paintings I'm currently working on are works-in-progress. I do have one I'm almost done, another Shakespear inspired 40"x30" piece, "To Bee or Not to Be?" but it's at my mentor's studio in the city and I haven't had a chance to photograph it. I anticipate I'll be bringing it home this week..so hopefully you can see a finished piece soon.

This piece is something I'm working on for my fall show with Michele Campbell, Wild Beauties and Untamed Beasts that is being held at the Wayne Arthur Gallery in September. It's only in the very beginning stages and has a lot more work to come, but I thought you might enjoy seeing something in the begining and following it to completion....that is if I remember to photograph it along the way!

Almost three years ago I lost my BFF, Helix, suddenly. He was a special, once-in-a-life-time, dog that spun into my heart the day I met him. My velcro dog and whenever possible, never further than an arms reach away. Nic-named Mr. U (Mr. Underfoot), The Heller, The H, BluDoo, Litty Fart. I always knew if it ever came down it, he would have given his life to save mine. An intelligent, work-loving, high spirited, intense, energitic but truly gentle soul.

I've heard it said you don't always get the dog you want, you get the dog you need. Well, old boy, I guess we needed to learn a few things and you taught us so much. Thankfully, my hubby was patient and supportive of my friend and together we gave him the best life we could. We also thank Helix for helping us make the decision to move to our country home. We are forever grateful, dear friend. I only wish you could have seen a few more summers here at your dream home, but at least the last two years you were with us you were the happiest heeler ever....a true working dog, always eager to please, at home on an acreage.

The initial composition for 'Midsummer Nights Dream' was inspired by some old photos I'd taken at the Beausejour Daylily Park a couple years ago. I started sketching out a simple floral piece, but as I was painting, it began taking on a magical life of it's own. All I could think about was Shakespeare's comedic play, 'A Midsummer Nights' Dream'. Which was kind of odd, because I've never read the play or even seen the movie. I searched out a summary of the play and low and behold the crossed loves, the magical flower love potion, the faeries all seemed to fit with this piece.

I am going to explore the Shakespeare theme in another piece I've already started and titled, 'Two Bee or not to be.' It's rather large and will take quite some time to complete. I'll try to give you work-in-progress updates on that one.

'Untamed!' is a breakthrough piece for me and I am currently holding it back to exhibit in a few shows. I feel untamed is a statement to the wilder direction I'm taking for 2011. This is my first true expressionist piece. It is filled with emotion. I am on an exciting journey toward a looser, more free, expression of self. I find it extremely liberating, yet very difficult, to become fully free on the canvas. My painting goal for the 2011 painting year is to continue to push my myself out of my comfort zone and move into new territory.

I hope you'll continue to stop by and follow me along throughout 2011. It's shaping up to be another busy art-filled year. I have works accepted into the cre8ery's auxillery gallery in January, a group show in February, a duo show with fellow artist and great friend, Michele Campbell, in September.....and who knows what else will crop up during the year!!

Also, I am still working on my Artist to the Rescue project and hope to have a few new pieces to post on the ATTR blog soon.

Meet Naula, an 11 year old cock-a-poo, I was asked to paint. This painting was given as a Christmas gift, so I wanted to wait until after Christmas to post on the blog. Commissions are always a little nerve-wracking, trying to put a vision that is in someone elses' head onto the canvas, but working with this client was a pure pleasure! I was provided with wonderful reference photos and good detail in order to get a feeling for Naula's character and a simple request for a cool palette. The rest was left up to me, I just hope the rest of her family likes my version.

Naula spends a lot of time in the family's amazing flower gardens, so I thought it was fitting to include some of gorgeous pops of colour that surrounded her in many of the reference images I was given.

The following story accompanied this painting in the show.

My Winnipeg Winter – During my very first winter in Winnipeg 16 years ago, I lived in a 3rd floor walk up apartment on the corner of Nassau and McMillian, just of Corydon Avenue. The rent was cheap, the heat was free and it was a perfect place to be. Young and in love, my boyfriend - who was to later become my husband - and I spent countless hours gripping one another’s mitten covered hands, bundled up tight against the cold, walking the snow packed sidewalks of our Winnipeg with imaginations running wild. We shared future hopes and dreams with only the howling winter winds to over hear us and whip our words straight up to the heavens.

The snow crunched beneath our feet and everything sparkled with promise and possibility. I felt safe and at home. I recall the soft streetlights breaking through the naked elm branches casting a spidery lace pattern onto the crisp clean snow. Every home we passed looked warm, cozy and inviting. Now and then the smell of burning wood filled our nostrils and sparked conversations on how we would one day have a fireplace of our own and which house we would buy if we only had the money, and where it would be. These were magical nights. Where has the time gone? It seemed like only yesterday. Perhaps this winter I can convince my Hunny to take another stroll down memory lane, I mean McMillian Avenue, to dream again.....

Originally, I had called this little piece simply Blue Cat...as I wasn't finished and didn't feel like fussing with naming a work-in-progress in order to post to the forum. Well, the painting kind of ended up naming itself! Catherine commented that blue was a very appropriate colour to paint her cat, who was named Streak as a kitten due to his tearing around the house like a 'Blue Streak'! LOL, now how fitting is that!?!!

This sweet little fella was inspired by a reference photo generously supplied, copyright free, for the Weekend Drawing Event on WetCanvas! by WC member "Scattykat", aka Kat Farmer . To visit the thread of reference images and see the one I used go HERE.

WetCanvas! is an online art community, and if your an artist and haven't checked it out, you must!!!! They have loads of forums, a huge free reference image library (RIL) and lots of demos for every art medium imaginable. Many of the different forums have monthly or weekly challenges for members. My personal favourites are the weekly WDE (weekend drawing event), the monthly floral, landscape and oil pastel challenges. I've been a member since 2005 and go under the name 'ElleZee'.

21 November 2010 my back yard

WooHOO!!! Winter arrived in Manitoba this week and I couldn't be happier!!! I LOVE freshly fallen snow!!!!!!!! It's like a giant white sparkeling duvet has been wrapped over the entire landscape. Everything looks magical and bejeweled. We received about 4 inches on Thursday then another couple Friday and it started up again Sunday. I also hear the forcast is for another 4 inches this week as well!!!! Better not put the snowblower too far away. My hubby is the snowmobiler in the family and he is beyond happy that he'll be able to get out on the trails earlier than he has in quite a few years!!!

One thing's forsure, there'll be no worrying if this Christmas will be a white one!!!

My aurora borialis theme carries on in this little miniature treasure. Painted in an expressionist style, loose and with lots of colour. He is partly of this world, partly of imagination; a shape-shifter and a star-gazer. I consider myself fortunate, that right outside my door I can still hear the coyotes sing and the wolves howl. I feel privilaged every time I catch a glimpse of a wolf darting through the woods or coyote trekking across a open field. They are awesome creatures and the embodiment of wildness and free spirit.

My Manitoba Art Expo 2010 experience

A week has past since the beginning of my art expo experience. It all started last Wednesday night with my booth set-up. Thursday evening was the grand opening of the show and the Pennies from Heaven charity campaign which raises money through the Christmas Cheer Board to ensure Christmas arrives for every Winnipeg family. We were blessed with amazing weather all weekend which certainly helped bring out steady crowds for all four days. It got to +14C in NOVEMBER!!! Can you believe that!?!! On Sunday a special breakfast was held before the show opened with many artists and volunteers in attendance. Sunday turned out to be my busiest day and then Monday was tear down day. Over all, I had a great time would do it again.

Here is my 16' booth all set up. Expo sets up all the panels and provides the tables and signage. Artists then come in and simply hang their work. It took a bit longer than I thought it would to hang my work and place the tags, but I think it was worth the effort and looked good. Definitely colourful!!

Many thanks to my friend Dale Turner for loaning me her lights! Here's a photo from a few booths over with the lights off and they sure do make a difference!

This is the Showcase Gallery, where every artist entered in the show is encouraged to display one piece of their work (it's not manditory) and the public is invited to vote for their favourite. This year's People's Choice Award was won by Julie Harris, congratulations Julie!! I chose my painting 'Group of Lucky 7 - Vera' to showcase, as I wanted to promote my Artist to the Rescue project. It was a great venue to tell people all about the project and the blog.

Over the course of the weekend I met many, many, many dog, cat and animal lovers and had a great time laughing and even shared a few tears, hearing stories of beloved pets that have touched our lives and made an everlasting place in our hearts. I'm so inspired by the all positive comments and reactions that I can't wait to get back to my easel and begin painting!!!!

Finally, A BIG THANK YOU to all who purchased my work! I hope you find the perfect place to show your new pieces!! I'm happy to know my paintings have found good homes! I'd also like to say a special thank you to my hubby and lovely assistants Dale Turner and Mom Z for helping man my booth Friday, Saturday and Sunday so I could grab a bite to eat and have a little break. You guys were awesome!!

I live in rural Manitoba, where many of the small communities have their own weekly newspaper to report on the local 'goings-on'. This week my art events captured the attention of reporter Adrian Alleyne from the Beausejour Review and I was asked to meet for an interview. We arranged to get together at the Wayne Arthur Gallery which allowed Adrian to take in my HERstory show. I was a little nervous, rambled on too much, was tongue tied and wished I had a do-over immediately afterwards, but it was a fun interview with lots of thought provoking questions and I think he did an awesome job making me sound 'put together' in the finished article. It was a great experience and the first time I've ever been interviewed regarding my own art.

This is sweet little Vera (aka Viv), scars and all, the first in my series titled 'Group of Lucky 7' inspired by the 7 dogs that the Winnipeg Humane Society raised funds to send to Best Friends Animal Santuary in Utah. This horrific case consisted of the 64 terrified dogs being seized from a private residence in Gull Lake, Manitoba many were injured, suffering open wounds, covered in garbage, dirt and feces. Now lucky Vera's living a great life in beautiful Utah thanks to the tireless efforts of the staff at WHS.

ANNOUNCING - my 'Artist to the Rescue' (ATTR) Project!

Many of people speak of a journey to 'find themselves', to discover some ultimate purpose in their lives. An ongoing search for something that just 'clicks', makes sense in their soul and moves them to a higher place. The elusive 'Ah, ha!' moment. Well, a great thing has happened to me in the past couple weeks, I've found mine.

I love animals, if you spent any time with me at all or on my blog or website, than I'm certain you've picked that up; and in case you haven't noticed, I also love to paint. So, what better thing to do than merge these two passions together and try to help an animal charity I care about!?! I've been inspired by other amazing artists out there taking this type of action already, but I've decided to make this project uniquely my own. I've filled out the paperwork, dotted my i's and crossed my t's , contacted and received approval from all the right people in all the right places...so here goes......my 'official' announcement.

For 2011 I have committed to a Third Party Fundraising event for the Winnipeg Humane Society titled ARTIST TO THE RESCUE . During the remainder of this year and throughout 2011 I will be creating artwork inspired by the shelter's own adoptees. The paintings will be posted as completed and available for sale on the blog specifically dedicated to this project http://www.artisttotherescue.blogspot.com/ with 50% of the price being donated to the WHS to help other dogs, cats, critters, bunnies and birds along their journey to find forever homes!!!!

Not everyone can find the time, space or funds to adopt a living, breathing pet of their own, but I'm certain most of us have a little wall space available at home, the cottage or in the office where we can adopt-a-painting. A win-win, you get an original piece of artwork as well as knowing you've helped support an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of animals in need. 'Shorty' has been inspired from an image courtesy of 'J' on Wetcanvas! and I do not know his story, if he's a rescue or comes from a caring reputable breeder, but I have been wanting to paint him for quite some time and figured he'd be a great model to kick things off with!

In 2011 my goal is to paint as many adopted shelter animals from the WHS as I possibly can, and then donate 50% from the sales of those works back to them. I'm hoping to paint between 25 - 50 paintings and then hold an exhibition to celebrate.

The Falls, a fall walk and more falls!!

This painting is on 2" gallery wrap canvas, with the image wrapping around the sides. No framing is necessary. This piece is loosely based on the major land feature that I grew up going to elementary school beside. Kakabeka Falls, or simply The Falls, as the locals call them, are located in a gorgeous Provincial Park located a short drive West of the city of Thunder Bay, ON. I have always adored the beauty of these waterfalls and now living in the flat lands of Manitoba, do miss them now and then. Amazing how much one takes things forgranted when easily accessable....guess that means I need to get back for a visit soon, right Mom?!! :)

What a spectacular September day yesterday!!! The weather was amazing, reached a high of +20C, and with all the fall colours we couldn't help get out for a walk. Here's a photo of my two hooligans out in the back pasture behind our property. I wanted to make sure I took them out there before the farmer collects these gorgeous straw bales!

And more Falls!!! Here is an image taken of the out going tide, while on our vaction to visit good friends in New Brunswick in October of 2006. The amazing Reversing Falls of Saint John, NB where the falls actually reverse due to the tremendous action of the changing tides from the Bay of Fundy! A specatular thing to see.

And here they are again, 12 hours later at high tide. Such a cool phenomenon to witness!!!

I am also very happy that they selected my 'Manitaurora' bison painting to publish with the story.

WHERE is a tourist information magazine that goes out local hotels providing travel tips and hot picks for visitors to our fine city telling them all about the current trendy restaurants and events to check out while they're here.

This impressionistic piece was inspired by a photo taken just down the road from my own home. Some days I go out deliberately looking for reference material but it's not unusual for me to stop the car, even on my way to work, and jump out and snap a reference photo or two of an amazing field or sky. I use my reference material very loosely. More so to inspire a sketch, then when I paint I go from my sketch and memory, not looking directly at a photo. I find it more fun and spontaneous to paint using my own imagination.

Here's the reference that inspired the above painting. It is one of 16 images I posted this past weekend for the Weekend Drawing Event on WetCanvas! an online art community, which I belong to. Each weekend a different host posts images or challenges for other artists to use and have fun with. It's a great place to play and learn, if you're an artist you absolutely must check it out! There is a wonderful Reference Image Library with thousands of copyright free images for artists to use, free of charge, as reference material.

WOW! August 8th was +31 degrees Celsius and best described as SUNNY and HOT!!!

It was an absolutely gorgeous day to hold an outdoor art show & sale on the grounds of the Historical Captain Kennedy House, home of the Maple Grove Tea Room. We couldn't have asked any thing better....well maybe a sun-brella ;) I was invited to join this premiere sale organized by Valerie Brown, manager of the Maple Grove Tea Room and I do hope she decides to make it an annual event! Sales were slow, but being a new event, I'm not too surprised. We had a good amount of traffic, many folks that stopped in were simply out for a Sunday drive down scenic River Road and stumbled upon our display, as well as the customers straight from the tea room.

This is the front elevation of the beautiful Maison Maple Grove, Capt. William Kennedy's house, constructed in 1866 with aid of local architect Duncan McRae who also designed many other significant stone buildings (many still in use!) in the Lockport area. Capt. Kennedy's wife, Elenor Cripps was also a painter....so how fitting is that?? holding an art event here?! Perfect, I think! There are even some of her paintings in the museum itself.

This is a photo of my 'sampling' display. Being a first-time event there were quite a few unknowns, but I think it turned out well. I brought a variety of hardware/tables/easels and this is what I ended up with. I'm just happy my oil pastel paintings didn't melt!! If they can survive this, they can survive anything! LOL!! Next year I'm planning on having a nice white tent, then come rain or severe shine my paintings, customers and I will be comfy.

There were 7 other vendors in attendance with a nice variety of work that ran the gamete from antique prints and memorabilia, to original paintings, photography, hand crafted jewelery and mixed media work.

This was my very nice neighbour for the afternoon, Kreations by Karen Rogers from Camp Morton. She produces stunning hand crafted resin artwork and jewelery.

Winnipeg painter, Leona Brown, was out with us demonstrating Golden's new open acrylics...even in the heat they stayed open! Great demo Leona!

Southern Manitoba photographer Judith Voth was on hand with gorgeous breath-taking, heart-warming images.

and my good friends, Beausejour artists Darlene Omichinski, Arlene Omichinski & Michele Campbell arrived with a beautiful sampling of their original acrylic paintings, prints and cards. Believe me that's them, even if they didn't want their pictures taken! ;)

It's now official! Manitoba Art Expo

Well it's official! I really am in Manitoba Art Expo 2010!! Now that I'm on the website it feels like it's actually happening. www.manitobaartexpo.ca/artists.html

Guess I'd better get cracking and do some painting!!! I'm very excited and a lot nervous....it's the largest fine art fair in Manitoba and the only thing like it. The Assiniboia Group of Artists Cooperative Inc. is the group that organizes it. All participating artists go through a jury process and are accepted into the show based on professional presentation of their work, originality, skill and quality. As for the show itself, the organizers set up the booths a head of time, each artist purchases lineal footage of display and then the artists (members of the co-op) come in and set up in their preplanned space. Which makes for a uniform look for the show and utilizes the space available to a maximum. Of course, members are expected to volunteer for misc. duties prior to and throughout the show, like touch up painting of display panels, or setting up the booths, etc.

The show has been partnered with CancerCare Manitoba for the past decade. I'm not exactly sure if it will stay the same or if there will be a new charity this year.....guess I'll become more informed as we near the show dates. :)

It's all about Pinawa

Pinawa is a small town of about 1500 residents located in southeastern Manitoba, 110 kilometres north-east of Winnipeg. Last weekend I attended a small art sale, Pinawa Art Extravaganza, that is in it's fourth year running through a group I belong to called the Eastern Manitoba Artists Co-op. EMAC started out holding this sale in conjunction with the towns 'Art in the Gardens' event but has changed in the last couple years to piggy-backing with the town's birthday weekend. The birthday weekend is the weekend prior to the garden event and a better choice IMHO.

I participated the very first year with the gardens and the show was so-so....being new, etc. A few years have passed and this year I decided, in preparation for Manitoba Art Expo this fall, that I would give it another try. I have to say I think it was a great success! I sold quite a few smaller works. Who doesn't like an original work of art for under $30?? I even sold a small painting to a wonderful woman from my old home town, Thunder Bay!! We had a great chat about horses.

Here's a photo of my booth set up for this event. Weather was rainy, so we were very happy to be inside, I think the rain helped bring people in. Thankfully, for Art Expo they set up the booth display, artists just show up with their work.

Raven tales, a special find and Inukshuks

The raven is a character that has been used in the mythology for thousands of years by many different cultures. Often depicted as a trickster, a hero, and in some First Nations legends even as the creator of human beings. The legend that inspired my bright colourful paintings was the Raven as the Sun Thief. I can imagine the star light, moon, sun and reflecting off his irridescent black feathers.

The Legend of Raven

This is an ancient story told on Puget Sound and includes how Raven helped to bring the Sun, Moon, Stars, Fresh Water, and Fire to the world.

Long ago, near the beginning of the world, Gray Eagle was the guardian of the sun and moon and stars, of fresh water, and of fire. Gray Eagle hated people so much that he kept these things hidden. People lived in darkness, without fire and without fresh water. Gray Eagle had a beautiful daughter, and Raven fell in love with her. At that time Raven was a handsome young man. He changed himself into a snow-white bird, and as a snow-white bird he pleased Gray Eagles daughter. She invited him to her fathers longhouse. When Raven saw the sun and the moon and the stars and fresh water hanging on the sides of Eagles lodge, he knew what he should do. He watched for his chance to seize them when no one was looking. He stole all of them, and a brand of fire also, and flew out of the longhouse through the smoke hole.
As soon as Raven got outside he hung the sun up in the sky. It made so much light that he was able to fly far out to an island in the middle of the ocean. When the sun set, he fastened the moon up in the sky and hung the stars around in different places. By this new light he kept on flying, carrying with him the fresh water and the brand of fire he had stolen.

Ravens feathers never became white again after they were blackened by the smoke from the firebrand. That is why Raven is now a black bird.He flew back over the land. When he had reached the right place, he dropped all the water he had stolen. It fell to the ground and there became the source of all the fresh-water streams and lakes in the world. Then Raven flew on, holding the brand of fire in his bill. The smoke from the fire blew back over his white feathers and made them black. When his bill began to burn, he had to drop the firebrand. It struck rocks and went into the rocks. That is why, if you strike two stone together, fire will drop out.

Thought I'd share some photos I took of a special find in the grass of our west pasture a couple summers ago. Miraculously, my hubby went right over the nest with the riding lawn mower and didn't break one egg!!!! After discovering it, we marked it with a stick to avoid mowing in that area until they were gone.

A travel pic taken on our exhilarating hike to the Ink Pots at Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park last fall. Hikers have assembled these inukshuks on a shallow riverbed and we made sure to add a few rocks to the display ourselves.

This piece came right out of my imagination. I wasn't sure exactly what colour he was going to be, but that is how he turned out and I'm quite pleased. I was after an action and movement, like he's about to catch a fish. I am now thinking of doing a couple more where he has got the fish. I received lots of positive comments on him at a small local show I attended.

Did you know Manitoba has a desert!? The Spirit Sands Desert (although lately it's getting a bit too much rain to be an official desert) is just outside of small town of Carberry. Spirit Sands is located in the Spruce Woods Provincial Park and is complete with blossoming cacti and home to the rare Northern Prairie Skink, Western Hognose Snake and Smooth Green Snake! This image was taken on a day trip with friends couple summers ago. Sadly, due to the increased moisture, this desert is closing in quickly and will probably be completely covered by grasses within another 20 to 50 years.

This is our back yard......well part of it. LOTS of grass to cut! My awesome hubby takes care of it all, making our yard look like a park. It's such a peaceful cozy place to live and to paint...and in case you were wondering, the image at the top of my blog behind the title is of the this same west yard.

This is taken on the rocks of the St. Andrews Blockhouse Historic Site, NB. That's the United States in the background, across the bay. St. Andrews was such a wonderful place, great little boutiques and art galleries! The people were absolutely awesome! They even had the CUTEST Tim Horton's I've ever seen! Guess I'll have to post a photo of that later.

These Yellow Lady Slippers grow in the ditch at the end of our driveway. They are one of Manitoba's wild orchids and are absolutely gorgeous. I've heard a certain bacteria or fungus must be present in the soil in order for them to grow....don't know if that's true, but they are almost impossible to transplant. There is also a 'showy' variety that blooms a few weeks after these guys that are,considered by many, even more beautiful.....I'll share images of those in future post. :)

My visit to the Chicago Art Institue in 2006...I could have spent a week in there easy! I look forward to visiting Chicago again, it's such a lively city. I'm already planning to take the Frank Lloyd Wright Tour next time around!

'From My Garden'

This piece was done from life, direct from flowers cut from my own garden. These irises are decendants of original roots given to me by my Grandmother over a decade ago. They have even survived being ripped out of their bed one December, moving, and then spending the entire winter in a container outside, and then being planted the following spring! Talk about hardy. They hold a special place in my heart, as my 'Gram' is no longer with us, but I can still enjoy her memory through these beautiful flowers she gave me so long ago.

A little fawn left in our yard a few weeks ago. It is common for a doe to leave her baby in an area she believes to be safe during the day while she goes off to graze. I believe this little fella was newly born that very day, his coat still had that freshly dried look. I waited all evening to witness the mother return and call to her new baby, and watched them reunite and baby take a good long drink. It was just too dark to get any good shots of that, unfortunately.

J'ai aimé Montréal! We just returned from exploring the jewel of a city, Montreal. I am in love!! Visited the beautiful Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and viewed many spectacular works. So inspiring!!!!!
